Saturday Night Live's Michael Che is kicking off his summer of Che series at Irving Plaza on Saturday, June 7th. It had been a while since SNL produced a recognizable face that people across the globe have seen tell some pretty suspect jokes! His segment with Colin Jost arguably saved a beloved program that has been airing for generations. These days folks tune in every week to see what inappropriate jokes these two are going to be writing for each other.
It's not just "inappropriate" or "dark" comedy that's part of Michael Che's repertoire. He's got a lot of topics to pull from, and yet he's able to keep that cynical tone and almost straight face while telling jokes that have made him a household name on SNL. Michael Che has announced that the "Summer of Che" is upon us, but ... there's a bit of a twist! There are actually no other dates announced besides this performance at Irving Plaza on June 7th. It also means that you're not getting a massively over-rehearsed set from Che. There's a good chance that he'll be up there doing his best to wing it! With a venue like Irving Plaza and his experience doing live TV, you can be sure it's going to be an interesting set, regardless of what he comes up with.
If you know Michael Che from SNL and you're not familiar with his stand-up sets, you could be wondering exactly what he brings to the table. To be honest, he's one of those comedians who can have a rant about anything and everything under the sun. Race jokes are very much on brand with him, but he's started to add some politics into the mix, even. That part of his sets has increased over the last few years thanks to his time on the show. What you're really going to see is one of the smartest minds in all of comedy. He's got a bit of that goofy side still, but at this point, everyone who's been watching him perform over the last few years can tell you he can make something out of nothing.
This can be a bit of an issue! Michael Che's show is set to start at 10 pm. The show is right after Vinny G from Jersey Shore's completely different comedy experience on Saturday, June 7th. If you wanted to be at both, you can, but you need to buy separate tickets. Those who are only coming to see Michael Che might have a tough time finding parking and accessing the venue early. It might be best to take a ride-share app and not have to deal with parking. If you arrive early, you might have to wait a bit for access, but it's still worth it to find a spot near the stage.
